CICS : why we have 32KB limitation in COMMAREA

The length option in XCTL, LINK specifies half word binary field. Half word binary can hold maximum value of 32K (i.e, 2 power 15 = 32768 bytes. Ie, 32KB. The left most bit used to represent SIGN). That is why we have 32KB limitation in COMMAREA.
